Q. My Great Grandfather who was a Private in the 21st RNBI. My searching suggests very strongly that he married while the Regiment was stationed at Windsor in 1827-8. There is little doubt he was C of E and my searches of the registers of both Old Windsor and New Windsor yielded nothing and neither did I see any marriages of army personnel. This suggests to me that there was some form of special arrangement for men stationed at Windsor Barracks or that I am looking in the wrong Parish and wondered if you could point me in the right direction.

A. by Valerie Storie [9-Nov-2002] The Parish nearest the barracks would have been Clewer. Apparently the Parish Church of Windsor is St John the Baptist - this church is in the shadow of the Castle and although the present building is relatively modern, it is the oldest Church - as such - in Windsor as there has been a church on the site since Norman times.

However, there is a Garrison Church - this is Holy Trinity in the St Leonards area of Windsor. This wasn't built until 1842 so it was after the dates you are interested in.

I put "holy trinity windsor" into my google search engine and it came up with a couple of websites. You make like to try www.thamesweb.co.uk/windsor/info/spirit.html or in fact just the thamesweb  site in general may give you some information about Windsor. I gather the address for Holy Trinity is Claremont Road, Windsor, Berks. SL4.

It is usual for marriages to take place in the bride's home parish - if she was a local lass then possibly she could have been from one of the other villages nearby, Datchet for instance or Upton (now part of Slough).
