You can:

  • order a copy of the Birth Brief in which a name appears for £2 per Birth Brief + SAE (stamped addressed envelope). This will be in Personal Ancestral File Pedigree Report format (see sample). Optionally you can also get it in a file in GEDCOM format.
  • contact the person who submitted the Birth Brief if she or he is currently a member of the society
  • If you are a member of the Society you can use this Birth Brief form (needs Adobe Reader) or create a GEDCOM file with similar information to submit your own birth brief.

‘Birth Brief’ is the name given to five-generation ancestral (pedigree) charts containing the names and vital records – Birth/Baptism, Marriage and Death/Burial – submitted by co-operating members of the Berkshire Family History Society. Most have Berkshire entries but some will have few or none as the prime connection with Berkshire is only that a descendant is (or was) a member of Berks FHS.

The Birth Briefs have been computerised for easy search and retrieval. This index gives surnames and forenames with vital records by year and county. It currently (May 2012) contains 35,325 names (compared with 34,787 in September 2011).

For ‘living’ persons – defined as those born less than 110 years ago for whom there is no death record – dates are replaced by ‘...’ in the Index and may not be included on any printed output we supply.
